Superman Returns (2006)

Wednesday, June 28th, 2006

This movie has Superman in a younger and much prettier form than ever before.  The movie also has a relatively engaging plot which I won’t give away.  Eva Marie Saint plays Superman’s mom, does a superb job and lends a bit of class.  The film doesn’t stray too far away from old traditional Superman virtues.  Was Superman always unequivocably good?  Was there never so much internal tormoil to Superman as compared to Batman or Spiderman?  Nevermind, the movie is still amazingly entertaining.  The movie can be extremely loud and extremely quiet.  Superman is superbly graceful in the quiet moments.  Critics have complained it’s longish — perhaps too many long shots of Superman’s pretty face, but I suppose I didn’t mind (this is what happens when you hire a gay director).  Others might get a little disinterested, but really those shots aren’t that long.

The Colbert Report 6/19/06

Funny gay jokes: Stephen Colbert does a piece on the gay threat down, captured on YouTube.  About attraction to Brad Pitt’s abs in Fight Club, Colbert says: "Come on, I’m not gay, but I’m human."

Everything you wanted to know about never thought to ask about the thing.  One shouldn’t be surprised that even way back in time, there was mysticism about it.  One might even think people are obsessed with it, but I am not, of course.

One thing I’ve realized over time (not just from this book) is that Freud was always an idiot.

Design e2 (TV program)

It’s on PBS and narrated by architect fan/wannabe Brad Pitt.  Nice to see in HD, except that they are continually using this tilt-shift cinematography which makes everything, besides the one person/object in focus, look out of focus/like a toy.  It’s modernist but distracting.  Some interesting presentation on power/water/light saving ideas for buildings.

Fable: The Lost Chapters (PC game)

Slightly different from the usual fantasy kill and plunder character development games like Dungeon Siege.  Sort of like Indigo Prophecy, but actually much faster to play with fewer pointless and stupid puzzles.  In one way, it is sexual orientation inclusive — there are places in the game where you need to get married and the game does allow different matchups, though the opportunities seem non-existant in some of the towns.  But in other ways it is disappointing: having sex (nothing explicit shown of course) is strictly limited to heterosexual couplings even if you are married to a guy!

Also doing quests out of order or simultaneously leads to some glitchy gameplay.
